Beijing Responds to U.S. Tariffs: No Progress in Negotiations

On Thursday, China announced that there are currently no active negotiations with the United States regarding tariffs, despite recent signals from the White House suggesting a potential reduction in tensions with Beijing.

During a press conference conducted in Mandarin, He Yadong, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce, articulated that all reports concerning advancements in bilateral discussions should be disregarded.

Yadong asserted that for the United States to effectively address the issue at hand, it is imperative that it cancel all unilateral measures imposed on China.

Earlier this month, the White House implemented a 145% tariff on goods imported from China. In retaliation, Beijing imposed its own tariffs and heightened restrictions on the export of critical minerals to the United States.

As reported by state media, the statements made by the commerce ministry were consistent with those of Guo Jiakun, the spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, who indicated on Thursday afternoon that there were currently no discussions taking place.

Earlier this week, China issued a warning regarding potential countermeasures against nations that may engage in agreements with the United States that could undermine Beijing’s interests.

On Thursday, the Ministry of Commerce underscored the initiatives undertaken by both the government and the private sector to facilitate the sale of goods intended for export to the Chinese market.
